Do the Dü
Friday 23/03/07: Medicine Bar, London, EC2
CHICKEN LIPS (Adrift Records)
The Janitors (Primitive/Housekeeping)
First off, big love to everyone who made Do the Dü’s launch night such a blinder. If it wasn’t for you characters we wouldn’t be back now, bothering your inboxes with news of the next quarterly knees-up.
Three’s a crowd- puller…
Ok. So it goes something along these lines. A couple of chaps from Stafford (Dean Meredith and Andy Meecham) form acid house/rave crew, Bizarre Inc, and notch up three UK top ten hits. Jump to the tail end of the last millennium and from the ashes comes an oddly named electro-house-dub-disco outfit which knocks out not one, but two sublime long-players. They then enlist label entrepreneur (try Bear Entertainment for starters), studio hotshot and deejay in his own right, Stevie Kotey and the third Chicken Lips LP is in the post.
Somewhere along the way (more specifically, track five on their second album) Chicken Lips snowballed out of control. You know the one: dernuh, dernuh dernuh-nuh-nuh… Anyhow, 2003’s ‘He Not In’s swaggering beats and New-York/eighties disco smatterings gained support from the obscure, the mainstream and most of what lies between. Need more convincing?
Naaaame drop…
Amongst their pioneering original releases, which effortlessly fuse proper music with the more electronic kind, the ‘Lips have become remixers-in-demand: We’re talking Underworld; we’re talking Morcheeba; we’re talking talking Plantlife, Supergrass Josh Wink and Bentley Rhythm Ace (ask your older sister). Fingers? Many pies? Oh yes.
Kotey is the man responsible for show-boating the Chicken Lips sound to the global masses; making sure his bredrins are on cue for their next studio incarnation. This discerning musical merchant will be found gracing the Medicine Bar Basement this spring.
Free stuff…
Those lovely chaps at Adrift have entrusted 200 copies of Chicken Lips’ latest LP, ‘Making Faces’ to The Janitors to give away on the night. All we need is a hair-brained scheme to work out how to do it.
And yes, they’ll be back too. The Janitors (Chris Hammond and Iain Hrynaszkiewicz) will be expertly plugging any Chicken Lips-shaped holes in the evening’s roster with their special blend of soul-infused dancefloor fodder. Lovely.
The bit about the night
Do the Dü. It's about music; it’s about soul. It's about house, disco, electro, hip-hop, garage and anything else that feels good. Downstairs and out of sight, it’s a party for girls; a party for geeks, doing it, bouncing off the walls. F**k dressing up, let’s dance.
