The underground side of soul, house and hip hop has never sounded better than right now. March’s Common Ground is all about showcasing the talent bubbling up from the North, a groove ready to take over the world.
Martin Brew is one half of J-Walk, the acclaimed duo who are busy creating their new LP for Peacefrog - ‘Heartbreakers and Rumpshakers’. We’ve managed to drag Martin out of the studio to spin his brand of ‘fuzzy funk’ for us. As the main man for many years in vinyl addict’s paradise Fat City, expect his set to be an odyssey through time and tempos.
Stet & Deviant return from the Planet of the Breaks for more adventures on the four wheels of steel; they rocked it something chronic at Common Ground last year. These boys are a bit nifty with the old gramophones as they blaze their way through breaks old and new.
Philly Whiz appear live on stage to promote the follow up to 2005’s top ten UK hip hop masterpiece ‘Up The Wizard’s Sleeve’, this time with Random Era in tow. ‘The Searching Years’ looks like being another jewel in the UK’s rap crown, hear it live on March 30th.
And finally in the small but perfectly formed Fishtank we have two independent labels on the eclectic side of things sharing the decks as Five20East join our own Sick Trumpet DJs. Recently reborn as a download label, Five20East are the Glasgow based purveyors of deep house that is home to our guests, Chris Barker and Si Murray. ‘The Deez/Living This Day’ is Chris’ first contribution to the label and is essential for those who appreciate the Detroit school of super-deep house music. As part of Cronk Family Enterprises Si Murray has just delivered ‘A Quiet Rebellion’, which contrary to it’s title is a bit of a floor shaker. You should all know the Sick Trumpet crew by now, as they are three of the Common Ground team (Phat Phil, Ste Hodge and Phil Charnock) and are providing Liverpool with a seriously high quality imprint that is making an impact on leading DJs boxes from Toxteth to Tokyo.
Roll on pay-day, roll on Common Ground, roll on the Mum.
