Well, I don’t know how well you’ve been keeping up with your Sheffield underground clubland gossip, but it’s been an interesting time at UG towers, involving new nights, venue changes and all sorts. But all through that tumultuous time we’ve been nurturing this tasty, and rather large, clubbing treat, and now we’re ready to unleash it in all its glory (ooo-eerrrrr).
It’s been one of the worst kept secrets in Sheffield clubbing that we’d finally confirmed James Zabiela’s long overdue return to Urban Gorilla, but when a DJ stirs up that much excitement and causes that much general dancefloor destruction on every occasion he visits us (including legendary nights at Fez Club, Charles St, and a few in .zero) it’s kinda hard to keep it under wraps (especially when he posts it on his blinkin’ myspace site). Anyway, now, long after everyone knew about it, we can officially announce the return of one of the greatest, most creative and astonishing DJs ever to grace our night. Many of you will know the story about JZ being championed by Sasha, winning DJ competitions and all that, but really, the brilliant DJ performances, mix albums and the like that he has since produced have far transcended the initial hype he caused. Come and see one of the world’s finest DJs using the full extent of his skills at what we’re very happy to say is one of his favourite clubnights.
But who could we find to join him on the line-up. Obviously we wanted someone of similarly brilliant quality, and ideally they would be someone who’d also become a favourite of the night with numerous brilliant performances at UG over the last few years. So the choice of DJ Rolando was obvious in the end. Rolando holds legendary status within the house and techno scenes for his legendary production as The Aztec Mystic “Knight of the Jaguar”, which was a musical cornerstone of the Detroit techno scene, as well as other work with Underground Resistance and Los Hermanos. What has really sustained his legend in recent years, however, is the fact that he is an unbelievable, technically brilliant DJ. His recent appearances at Urban Gorilla have included some of the finest DJ sets the night has witnessed. We launched our Undercover night with a secret set from him in full confidence that he would tear the Fez Club apart, and what followed was one of the most incredible and astonishing nights that UG has witnessed. In short he’s ace, and this is perhaps the most exciting main room line-up we’ve yet put on in the Fusion and Foundry.
And with such an amazing line-up in room 1, there was a chance that room 2 might have gone overlooked. So we’ve booked one of the finest DJ and production outfits in the UK to provide you with all of hiphop, reggae and funk needs, making it the perfect place to chill out away from the main room action, and to lively-up yourself on the dancefloor. The Nextmen, aka Dom Search and Brad Baloo have been collaborating together for the last 8 years, during which they’ve been firing out some of the UKs hottest hip-hop beats (check out Blood Fire, High Score feat Dynamite MC, Firewalking feat Cutty Ranks and Rodney P, and many more). What we’re concerned with tonight though is there DJing, which is an inspired mash-up of all the styles they love, and has had many a dancefloor and festival tent across the land partying til they drop. As their biography begins, they’re “widely regarded the globe over as the two most indispensable ingredients for a blazing party”, and with Stoaty on hand once again to support, room2 promises to be a truly tasty musical treat.
Price : £10 members / advance, £11 NUS / £12. 2230 – 0400
