Wow, I had a great time last night. It felt good to hear the phrase "There's a queue past Mello Mello" and to see the main room grooving to some great music. Like going back 10 years to Nation's hey-day.
I really enjoyed my set, the most comfortable I've ever felt behind the decks in such a large space. I got to roadtest music from pals like Chris Barker, Tim Scott and Si Murray on a rude system before getting stuck into a blend of forgotten classics and some great sounds from the here and now. I really enjoyed playing everything from 80s groove to deep techno, twisted hip hop and camp disco. Dance music is a big pallette to paint from. I gave everyone a taste of my varied taste and really enjoyed working such a great soundsystem, the main room has never sounded better. Gotta thank the Chibuku peeps for giving me another memorable gig.
I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard Scruff play, in all manner of venues and to very different crowds, and he never fails to amaze. He turned up stinking of pies and tea, giving me a tweak on the nipples as he took over control. His set was a stonk-plod marathon of ultimate bass and grinding slo-mo beats, all dripping with soul and infused with funk. He hit us with his rhythm stick good and proper.
I saw loads of familiar faces, plenty of my posse made the journey and made my night. A shout goes out to Mark Rowlands and his peeps who always turn up at the really special gigs, the lights flashing on his wheelchair when the tunes got really hot. It was rammed in there, you really do forget how crazy Nation can be.
I never made it to the end of the night, but got a text off someone who knows their music saying that Henrik Schwartz did the business, and I also heard the No Fakin boys destroyed the Annexe with their violin-toting super-set. It's a shame Q-Bert didn't make it, but Chibuku did an amazing job to line up C2C at such short notice. I stayed out of the whole 2 Many DJs thang, but heard Tane warmed tings up proper, he also looked well slick. You could tell he meant business.
Was impressed with the night on the whole, bravo to all involved.
