K'NAAN:

'Expect his debut to be one of the coolest hip hop gigs of the year'
-Time Out
'K'NAAN's performance is immediately and genuinely engaging'
-The Pulse
'There's an intelligence to K'NAAN's musings, and it's hard to find an
ounce of insincerity in his thoughtful proverbs and revolutionary rethoric'
-The Independant

The young Somalian K'NAAN strikes the international Hip Hop scene with his
first album to be released in UK (october 2006), 'The Dusty Foot Philosopher'.
Aged 27, he has been already remarked by Damian Marley, Mos Def
and Youssou N'Dour, both fascinated by the high relevance of his political poetry, his
pinched diction and arrhythmic scansion.

"When I was 11 years old, two arrivals appeared at my doorstep that would
prove to be the most influential things to come in to my life. Civil war and
Hip Hop" K'Naan

K'NAAN, 'the traveller', fled war-torn Somalia as a refugee at the age of 14
and arrived first in Harlem, then in Toronto. Elegant ambassador of
peace, K'NAAN rhymes against violence because he never forgot the chance he
had to escape death. The audience gave him a standing ovation when
presenting his work at the 50th aniversary of the UN Comission for refugees.

K'naan recently supported Damien marley on his World tour, and has performed gigs with the likes of Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. If you are into Hip-Hop without the bling bling, if you have an open mind, and if you love good music get down to the FREE workshop at Liverpool Uni, and the gig at the picket. Support band are Netsayi, and DJ's for the night are Eric Soul (Afrogroov), and DJ Edu (BBC 1xtra). A life changing experience for all!

K'naan reviews:

K’naan’s music is defiantly on the positive tip of the hip-hop spectrum, owing far more to ‘conscious’ rappers, such as his recent touring partners Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Jean Grae, than any thugged imagery. (At times K’nann’s lackadaisical nasal drawl recalls the style of Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip.) There’s also a sparkling edge in the expansive production from the Track and Field crew, who were responsible for bringing Nelly Furtado’s hip-hop infused pop to world’s radios. Striped back interludes offer up more somber images of K’naan’s life, simply backed by claps, drums or Djembe – an African guitar. The opening track Wash It Down introduces K’naan’s voice backed merely
by looped water splashes and paddled beats....read more at:

The Dusty Foot Philosopher is one of those rare albums that enlightens as much as it entertains. K'naan is a poet as much as a musician and, like Dylan, his social conscience runs concomitantly with his musical sensibilities. In the wake of an overwhelming sense of purpose, he frees himself of generic conventions and unites the dissonant traditions of rap, rock, folk, reggae, and African music. K'naan switches back and forth between different templates seamlessly, and it works thanks to a devastating lyrical potency. When he's not spitting ferocious, he's riding poignantly on an African folk guitar line. Incredibly, he bridges the divide between Public Enemy and Ali Farka Toure, Ben Harper and Eminem....read more at:
