Yes indeed, it’s time for another 2types show on Samurai FM – head on over to http://www.samurai.fm/2types/play to go straight into the music or if you want to admire my picture first, go to the 2types homepage http://www.samurai.fm/2types..! In case you’re new to the show, there are two types of 2types… the ‘mixtape’ shows do what they say on the tin being a 1 hour mix up and the regular 2 hour shows feature either a guest mix or interview. Previous guests have included Domu, Alex Attias, Alex Phountzi (Bugz in the Attic), Platinum Pied Pipers… you get the picture!
This session features a guest mix from Mettle Music, purveyors of fine compilations and increasingly their own original brand of jazzual house. Representing the label on the decks is Nic Conef. Nic is a veteran house head & DJ fully committed to the cause of proper house music since the earliest days of the Manchester club scene. His passion was further developed in the mid nineties thanks to the fresh approach of seminal British House labels, such as Paper, Toko and Nuphonic. Fully inspired off he went to develop his own sound with talented musician and percussionist, Mark Wadsworth. The label launched in October 2004 with 'Moodswings: The Vinyl Collection'. Summer 2005 saw the label raise the bar with the launch of the 'Vibes' series of quality compilations, exploring the influence of various musical genres from the past on contemporary productions. The albums are thoroughly researched to combine a mixture of obscure classics along with many new and exclusive tracks. The debut compilation - 'Latin Vibes: Lounge Selection' was released in July 2005, followed by 'Latin Vibes: Club Selection' in November 2005 and the latest release 'Jazz Vibes: Lounge Selection’ was released June 2006. Check http://www.mettlemusic.com for more.
Of course, alongside the Mettle selections you’ve got my choices. I couldn’t resist some Afrobeat to kick off, as I’m just back from an amazing couple of weeks in Uganda… so the master Fela opens the show, followed by another giant of the continent, Manu Dibango. Moving into a more contemporary sound, there’s a track from national treasure Will Quantic’s new LP ‘An Announcement to Answer’ on the excellent Tru Thoughts label. There’s new stuff from Montreal’s Brian D’Oliveira (http://www.myspace.com/briandoliveira) which fuses broken beats and Latino spirit. After the Bugz in the Attic 30 minute extravaganza in the last 2types mixtape show, I limited myself to two Bugz tracks – ‘Knocks Me Off My Feet’ taken from their new LP ‘Back in the Doghouse’ and my remix of ‘Move Aside’. There’s a great track from Richie Robinson (http://www.bluecityrecords.co.uk) and the remix version of what is shaping up to be one of the tracks of the year, ‘Soul Fever’ from Simbad. Taking it down a step, Lava Musique delivers a nice remix of Tone Control’s ‘Lift’ (http://www.myspace.com/tonecontrolmusic) and I‘ve recently discovered Joey Yeah Yeah’s Double Positive EP on Take the Money and Run Records (http://www.myspace.com/tmrrecords). Then we’re into the mix with Mettle and out the other side, there’s just time for the instrumental version of Diesler’s remix of Steve Austin on Sick Trumpet Records (http://www.sick-trumpet.co.uk) and a track from Jimpster’s latest offering ‘Amour’ on Freerange (http://www.freerangerecords.co.uk). And that’s it – 2 hours flies by!
Cheers,
Tim Scott
