I know there must be a few fans here and his third track has now been released off the album and managed to slip under the radar again, so this is now the 'what the fuck is he doing?' thread.

(As an aside to that, I quite like his new stuff.)

http://www.djshadow.com/ - 3 freaks plays when you open the site. Its Hyphy/crunk, but unmistakably shadow with a proper fucked up beat.

http://xxlmag.com/online/?p=3076 - 'turf dancin' - more hyphy, but I like this.

http://www.spinemagazine.com/music/july/djshadow/backstagegirl.mp3 - 'backstage girl' - Different, but very shadow in the beat.

Whats everyone thinking?

Ive got a copy of the album in the post and its actually one of the most anticipated things ive had sent to me - Ive got no idea what to expect for this.[/url]

My mates on tour with him at the moment as a guest vocalist on some tracks. Check my mates band, Stateless, I'd recommend them. Know it's not to everyones taste but hey, I like em! Quite chilled stuff.

and on listening, sounds too much like the other hiphop going down now in the charts broken beats, swollen basslines, respect to the man for trying a slightly different direction, not the right direction for me tho i guess i could have a laugh with it in a club shakin a bit of booty but we all got him down as a musical mastermind n initial contact with that is that its not. werd. shame the chibuku gig was cancelled, wouldv had a clearer picture f'sure...

don't know if he can make drum patterns using pro-tools, i've had a years experiance using pro tools all it is, is a sequencer, a professional one at that, i've done a breakbeat track using pro-tools and all i done was cut loops out of other people's music and created my own piece of music, you can cut individual kicks etc out of tracks but it takes a hell of a lot of time what with time stretching parts to fit to the bar and them not sounding good or tight etc, but with the old mpc you can knock a drum pattern out in a few minutes i can't see him just sacking the mpc off and producing full tracks using just pro-tools, maybe he's using pro tools as his sequencer now, because he used the built in sequencer of the mpc to produce everything before, i dunno it seems like that would be a pain in the arse doing things that way! :)

 not the best year i take it!

im a tools user, and erm you can make any drum pattern you want in it! also on the digidesign site b4 crimbo last year it had a big artcile about shadow and his control 24 and the way he uses it to automate his plugins....

he's been using protools since 1998..........

Shadow bought his first Digidesign Pro Tools rig in 1998, followed by Digi's Control|24 console and an HD system in 2003. He also took the time to "properly learn MIDI," he says, and opened the floodgates for new keyboards and his arsenal—including Native Instruments Reaktor, Kontakt and Battery and the GForce M-Tron virtual Mellotron plug-in. "I was getting frustrated with the natural limitations of having a stand-alone sampler like the MPC and decided to investigate the world of keeping everything in the computer and using programs like Battery and other sort of virtual MPCs," Shadow says. "I still use the tactile surface [of the Akai MPC3000], but the samples don’t live inside of it."

His MPCs have been workhorses for years, but Shadow didn't want to get complacent with his methods. "I felt at a certain point that it was becoming counterproductive to try to force myself to stay on this piece of equipment, which holds back my creative flow," he says. Now, rather than spending hours finding the perfect samples to shoehorn together, Shadow has a lot more options. For starters, he is playing parts and commissioning musicians to replay samples and his own ideas much more.

oh well you learn something new every day, and yes it ain't been that good a year using protools i've not been using it solid every day bit of a steep learning curve! i've found myself going back using reason then running stuff into pro tools through rewire , so much shit you can do with it tho i'm just gonna keep cracking away at it.

so he just uses the mpc like a midi controller?

how long have you been using tools for?

probably not, tho you might like the 02 console...the console he has costs about 5 grand, and thats just the console, the HD3 system would be costing at least another 10 grand ontop, with addtional IO boards, preamps n whateva else he uses above that. iv bin using tools 24/7 for a couple years now... you should be fine with an MBox...

shadow will just use the mpc for the pads, as you said as a midi controller, all the sounds and sequencing are taken care by the HD3 system - the difference is immeasurable!
