I love the world cup, just cos there is footy on every day for a month, I never support England... mainly cos I like Brasil better and like someone else pointed out there are too many players that I truly hate playing for us, and I hate the whole image of England fans abroad, and those annoying george cross flags that everyone has flying on their cars :evil:

It makes sense to support England if you are English and like football. Nothing wrong with getting behind your country is there??? We dont get many chances to do it! I cant believe people wont support England just because they dont "like" some of the players! Yeah nice one!
But as said before - dont put one of those stupid flags on your car! For gods sake just take a look at yourselves!

Well, my dad is from Glasgow and I lived there for 15 years, so I count myself pretty much as Scottish as I am Irish. bit of a mongrel breed, you could say.
It makes sense to support England if you are English and like football!
Why does it?
Why not like the best team?

It makes sense if you want to support England. If you don't, then it doesn't make sense.
We don't get many chances to do what ?
I completely agree with people who won't support England because they don't like some of the players, at least they've got integrity. The vast vast majority of Ingerlund fans are absolute gobshites as well and the less association I have with them, the better.

Think you find a lot of proper scousers and die hard Liverpool and Everton fans don't actually support England, i think its down to the huge Irish influence in the city. Then again things have changed the last 4/5 years dont know if its the growing student population from down south corrupting scouse minds.
To be honest don't really care if they win or loose as it would be silly to say i hate England, but i do fucking hate a large number of the players. Deifnately not supporting; Lampard (plays for Chelsea and broke Alonso's ankle), Neville (Plays for Man U, and admits to hating scousers), Joe Cole (Chelsea rent boy and scored winner agains Liverpool few times), Rio (Plays for Man U, scored winner against Liverpool and is a twat) oh god the list and reasons are endless.

In response to "Dad" - I will be supporting England because I'm proud to be English. Simple as really! Nothing wrong with that is there? Why would I want to support anyone else? Because there are "better" teams out there? Not really what supporting a team is all about is it? I don't own an England shirt and I dont feel the need to put a flag on my car and would like to think I'm not a gobsh##t!
Not likeing a team because its got twat face Neville in it or Chelsea scum like Lamps and Terry is a joke! There is no "I" in team! Here's to getting knocked out in the quarters on pens! Cant funking wait!!!!!! Lets hope in future years some of the other home nations can get their acts together and qualify and then you can support them

Sorry quoted that wrong.tut. :lol:
You happened to have been born in a certain place, why do you have a sense of pride about that?
British by birth.
English by the grace of god.
Being English is being party to generation after generation of achievements, firsts, history that has shaped this country, it's people and to a large degree, the world.
I'm proud to be part of that history, and to be able to identify my predecessor's part in that history back to the doomsday book.
You probably don't, but I feel embiggened by deeds done by Englishmen throughout the ages, and it makes me proud.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Thanks, its true though.
Most people think its just to do with footy, but it goes deeper than that. Most scousers i know are not from an English heritage.
Plus scousers around my age an older spent their childhood under a shit goverment that fucked Liverpool up the ass and left it to rot while the rest of the country progressed. So to be honest some people don't feel very English. Not to mention the ridicule you used to get for being a scouser outside of Liverpool.
There used to be a die hard Liverpool fan site that opened with the Phrase "Liverpool Is An Island Of Its Own" which emphasises this point. Try taking a England flag to a Liverpool away match and you would be surprised by the response. Don't say i didn't warn you.
Wouldn't say they hate England but just never felt part of it or support it.

Dont worry Jimmy lad, I understand what your saying. There's nothing better than watchin the little teams play against the big teams. National teams are obviously made up of the best players from each country, thus any team is capebale of beating another. Its a clichy, yes, buts its the reason I watch footy. I will be watchinf every game that is played (where possible depending on work etc). Football is great to play, great to watch and great to support.
Dont get all worked up about those that aren't that interested in the beautiful game, they clearly have more pressing matters like looking after thier pensions or building a ship in a small bottle.

Maybe France & Holland, but not to the same level.
I enjoy watching the African teams, because they usually play with a level of freedom too.
It's a hell of a lot more beautiful than hoofing it up to 'Crouchy'. Then there'll be a lot of TERRIBLE games, with teams grinding, because they saw Greece do it effectively in the European Championships.
Last World Cup I thought was really good was Italy.
Do you actually like football?
I like good football, yes. I don't like watching tedious games played by unadventurous defensive teams with poor players that are portrayed as being the best games ever.

Absolute bollox.
I went to watch Carlisle United v Plymouth Argyle years back when our goalie - jimmy glass - scored a last kick-off-the-game equaliser to keep us from being relegated into the conference. Now the game wasnt full of brazil-esq passing or Henry-esq finishing. It wasnt even that good a game, but when that ball hit the back of the net, with the last kick of the game, that was amazing. Without a doubt one of my greatest memories of football - not from Brazil or Arsenal - but CARLISLE UNITED.

I think you'll find that was the drama of the moment and the excitement. What it meant, what had happened for that one situation to occur, rather than the football on display. Big cloggers hoofing the shite out of each other can be good to watch, but don't tell me that's the football that's good to watch, it's them kicking each other.
Gary Breen for example, has a certain interest, simply because it's difficult to understand how someone so bad can be a professional footballer.
You say football is great to watch, you're simplifying it and bringing lots of different things into the description 'football'. For me, football is football, it's completely seperate from the experience of going the pub, travelling, being with my mates and so on. Which is why I can safely say, that great football is great to watch. Shit football is shit.
I'd imagine you have no time for such lowely clubs and believe that they shouldnt have got themselves into that position anyway (which they shouldnt have), but the moment had nothing to do with world class football.....just football.

football is all about stories, great stories as well as great football. south korea beating italy, romania beating argentina etc. sure there will be some fuckin woeful football played over the next few weeks, but there will be some timeless matches as well. i apologise if getting excited over this possibility is so deluded.
and for brazil winning the world cup, it'll probably happen, but dont think that it definitely will. it was supposed to happen in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1998, and it didn’t on any of those occasions. They have a great team but they are also missing their defensive lynchpin roque junior, so will be playing someone more inferior instead. roque junior was one of the biggest sack of shits i've ever seen at Elland road (no mean feat when the likes of frank strandli, Derek lilley and carlton plamer have 'lit' up leeds) so for them to be having someone else even shitter than him suggests a weakness.
but admittedly one that’s superseded by ronaldo, adriano, kaka, juniinho pernambanco, emerson and of course ronaldinho.

Couldn't give a shit about England. Don't matter to me if I live here and support an English team, club before country in my book. Like my brother, I've got English & Welsh blood, and I was born in Germany.
And for the record, although not as passionate about Germany as I am over Liverpool, I'd fookin love Germany to win. Germany over England any day.
PS Any "ENG-ER-LAND" hooligans wanna meet and discuss my preferences? :twisted:
