What's everyone's opinion?

Mine is that they are a very good band although the album isn't perfect - i also feel that people are starting to write them off because of the hype.

I also think that they may however be one album wonders.

The lyrics are great, the songs are fresh and original and also the bad have a good attitude towards the media.

I think they are good.

I have listened to the album more and more and everytime it keeps getting better.

As you have said, the lyrics and songs are 'fresh' and that is good.

They dont really do many interviews or talk for long as they are all a bit shy, which i think is defo good for em.

As for one album wonders........i dont think so.

To say they are going to be a 'one album' band is ridiculous.
Are the Kaiser chiefs or the Killers going to be one album bands?

The Darkness were 'one album' bands (if you can even call them that).

You cant put the Artic Monkeys in the same league as them.

Only time will tell. I think they will be with us for a long time.

i also feel that people are starting to write them off because of the hype.

You see i think its the whole boy who cried wolf thing. Last year Radio 1 and the NMe proclaimed that the Killers, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Hard Fi and Kasabian were the next big thing, then Arctic Monekys came along, they got handed the tag, in 4 months time there will be someone else, its now getting where people totally disregard it, and like you say, people are less interestee in hearing about them. Personally, i think they're just a good Inide band, nothing more, and im getting sick to death of hearing about them all the time.

They're not really my cup of tea, but I really do think there's something about the Arctic Monkeys in particular, that sets them apart from the retro "indie" bands around.

I get the sense from people I know that the lyrics are really good and the way the lad sings them is boss. People can relate to whats being said and played.

I get the same vibe from them that I got from when Oasis first came out....in that they're gonna be massive 'cos they appeal to the average lad on the street that I see. Whereas all these other retro "indie" bands, such as teh Kaiser Cheifs and co....whilst being decent bands in their own right, are a bit poncey.

The young boys in the lacoste and with the grade 0 on the back and sides, the footy heads and the Pleasure Rooms crew are fuckin' loving this band and really feel part of it.
In the same way that the scalls and that loved Liam Gallagher and could relate to them.

These people aren't listening to faggoty art-pop shite like Franz Ferdinand.

When you've got that crowd on your side you're onto a winner, since they make up the majority of the youth in this country.

I'm a big fan. And indie sometimes repulses me, so they have to be different to grab my ears.

Nah, I know, it's more just a frustration how every guitar band is proclaimed as the second coming.

Since 'The Second Coming'.

And that was rubbish. :)

Vastly overrated.

Not impressed by anything they have done before... and hardly original in any aspect that has been accredited to them.

I'm not really a fan of 'indie' music but i'm lovin this album. Been playing it in the car for the past 2 weeks. They may not be breaking any molds but there's something about them that appeals to the mass market.

In a way i really hope they don't make another album. I'll try to explain why... Think about about it, Faulty Towers is one of the best things ever, what if they made 2, 3, 4, 5 series, would it still be the british icon it is today.

the demo's that were knocking round online before they hit big were excellent, really gritty and so much feeling. The re-recorded versions of the songs for the album sound weak, over polished in places, and on some songs like "Riot Van" they've totally changed the lyric and part of the song structure, which hasnt worked. They are indeed a talented bunch of lad's, but remember they are only around the 19, 20 years old mark, they are simply lads writing song's about the town they live in, which is nothing new, at all, and has been done so many times before, and to a higher standard.

if you want to hear a truely stunning album about city life, go and track down a copy of Shack's "Waterpistol", about 11 years old now, and just depict's their struggle as, sadly, smack heads in Liverpool. Easily the best album of the last 15 years though, easily

As a self-confessed indie head, I can honestly say I think the Arctics are brilliant. No-one can really criticise them, as for their age they have produced a fantastic debut albulm.

NME plaudits will come and go, but in the Artics I think we have a band who people like because they're down to earth. The songs might not be epics but are catchy as hell and I for one look forward to many pissed up nights dancing around like a t*at to their songs!

They are ace, I have seen them about 8 times now and love them. Not a huge fan of the album, the demo tracks are better

Think you can still download them from www.arcticmonkeys.com

If you like them, some other Shef bands you may like the sound of...

Milburn
The Harrisons
Little Man Tate
Reverand & The Makers

I think they're wicked and that's irrespespective of me coming from Sheffield.

Like Geri, I preferred the demo tracks too.... more punch to 'em whereas the album, well, is just to toned down for my liking.

It's all the rage though innit, and many other people in this thread are quick to dismiss them which I suppose is fair enough if it ain't there cup of char. I think they're brilliant though and have handled the press well. Not sure what the response on their second album will be like though....

Geri> One of my mates at Sheff Uni has got a radio show and has interviewd some of them peeps - gut sheisse indeed gal.

They're by far and away the best new British band.....they shit all over the likes of The Kaiser Chiefs who I don't think are that good altohugh they're in turn a lot better than Hard-Fi who are atrocious.

Yes, obviously.... The lyrical content supercedes hard-fi....

Whoooooooooooooooooo!

Kaiser Chiefs are also to55.

Hard-fi's album, along with Kubb and The Editors were teh highlights for guitar music for me at the end of last year. 8) (Although I did pick up stars of CCTV a bit earlier than the the latter two).

Its a fair point.......worse bands EVER!

Surely Mike Flowers Pops (or whatever they were called) were worse?
The Darkness?
Busted?
Son Of Dork (SOD)?
Slipknot?
Korn?
etc etc

ALL worse than Hard-FI.

Where do you keep on hearing about them, Radio1? Sounds about right. My suggestion there would be to not listen to Zane Lowe (although he is good) coz he does ALWAYS goe on about them!

My idea would be to stop "hearing" about them and "listen TO them. That way you wont need to hear what everyone else is saying.

I like the album, even though it did take a little to get into it.

Maybe the saongs aren't as "raw" as the demo's, but when you record in the studio I;m sure that you have to lose some of that "rawness".

saw them in paris at the weekend and best gig i ve been to in ages, better than any of the manchester gigs ive seen them at. so good to see the preplexed frech folk wehn everyone started going mental, loads of crowd surfing and general moshing. reckon the brixton gigs will be pretty good tho.

Good Lyrics, average tunes with some exceptions ('fake tales of san fransisco' being one of them), plus the singers voice does my head in after a while.
