Leo Belchetz (Chibuku Shake Shake)
Chart: November 2004
1. Woody Braun & Allonymous – Finding Words Ain’t Easy [Most]
Captain Comatose and the Freaks serve up some filth.
2. Prztz – Everybody [Classic]
‘Everybody’ is proper boompty; ‘The King’ is the funkiest Classic track for ages!
3. The Mellokidz – (I Like) Everything You Do [Amfibius]
An unusually good vocoder vocal rides skippety hi-hats and a bouncing bassline.
4. Eclat & Prudo – What’s Happening In Pisa? [MFF]
They’re making superb music for fans of quirky house is what’s going down.
5. DJ Ali & T. Fuller – Show Me Right [Amuk]
One of house’s finest vocalists obliges on this not-quite-broken-beat number.
6. Eyerer & Chopstick – She Loves It! [Wizkidz]
One misogynistic line loses this spoken word acid cut a few bonus points.
7. Deviate – Groovin’ All Night [Mobile Trax]
The Swirl Peepz are so hot right now – their take on this groovy vocal is superb.
8. Cajmere feat. Dajae – I Need U [Cajual]
The old team reunited with a real old school feel. Caj dons his GV hat on the flip.
9. Swirl Peepz – Lotta Fun [Odds And Ends]
Stop-start kicks and an elastic bassline mean this 12” cannot fail.
10. Paul Woolford pres. Vice & Virtue – Jack Factory [Robsoul]
Jazzy piano licks and electronic squeals adorn punishing beats.
11. Induceve – Pick It Up EP [Dubsided]
Dub, techno & glitchy electronica all show their influence. ‘OooYesssSir’ the pick.
12. No Assembly Required – Build Your Own EP [Nono]
This has served a couple of months on the floor before making my chart.
13. Nathan Coles – The Jig
[i]This acidic take on Murk’s ‘Reach For Me’ shows that tech-house can be fun.
14. Mossa – You’re Losing My Mind [Circus]
A collection of tough, glitchy grooves, including the insanely funky ‘Brazil ‘99’.
15. Various – Label Sampler Volume 1 [Classic]
Finally, Classic let us mere mortals get our hands on some of DLC’s rarer works.
16. Frankie – Benga! [Frankie Rec]
Jeff Samuel unleashes the bleeps all over his excellent remix.
17. Various – Label Sampler [Lost My Dog CD-R]
Fans of the funkier side of tech-house could do worse than check this new label.
18. Faithless – Miss U Less, See U More [Cheeky]
Switch make this track their own by demolishing the original and starting again.
19. DJ Sneak – Fix My Sink [Trax]
A re-worked horn section and female vocals give this old fave a refreshing twist.
20. Marco de Souza – Step Over [Freerange]
The A is uplifting, while Solid Groove’s mix could find plays from Sasha to MAW.
This month I have rediscovered:
Winx – Don’t Laugh [XL 1995]
Much overlooked in the wake of ‘Higher State...’, this hypnotic cut is always suitably eerie for this time of year.
