Dear All,

Is it me or is the new fashion for White Females to try get their skin darker than that of Black Females ?

Being Black it has always be a subject that has left me really confused as every summer people that are White whom I work with & even friends make comment about how darker they are compared to myself ? ?

It seems that deep down White people want to become Black but not go all the way ?
Are you White & use a Sunbed or Fake Tan ? If so please explain, is their something within the mindset of people of White European origin that makes them do this ?

Just be happy with what you are or are you please comment & vote ?

It seems that the trend these days is to turn a slightly garish shade of orange much like the tango man, through the excessive use of sunbeds.
I do not understand this either as it generally makes the person look like they have been exposed to some sort of radioactive waste. It is most common amongst scally girls aged 14 - 20. Who knows why??
Did you know that the UK has a higher rate of skin cancer than australia? Very strange

to be honest i don't think it's a trend for white women to get their skin darker than black women (well maybe it is for the women that u work with)....... :?

my take on it all is that it's summer (well it's trying to be) and most people either go on holiday or attempt to sunbathe in this country & it's all about the sun kissed skin during the summer months that makes u look healthier and give u that summer time feeling which generally makes people feel a lot happier.... compared to the winter months when all we want to do is cover up from head to toe and hibernate.......

it's too easy to say "just be happy with yourself"..... it's sad to say but i don't think any of my friends, male or female, are 100% happy with themselves whether it be their physical appearance or their mental state......

i think that's evertything i wanted to say.......... :D

Personally I think that, for a majority, its just about having a nice healthy tan. I love having a freshly holidayed glow, wouldnt put it down to wanting to be black, or not being happy with myself :? ......... plus it definitely beats 'pale crack whore chic' anyday

I think its a bit of a mix between competition and fashion, especially with young girls.

A golden tan usually does look more attractive than the transparent look, so if a girl's mates all decide to purchase a tan then she'll probably feel at a bit of a disadvantage in attracting lads when they all head for some quality breaks at the Wonderbar on a Saturday night.

Then it seems to become a bit of a complex. I've known people who's face looks about to fall off with dryness say they're too pale because they haven't been to the sunnies in a while (a few days!). A bit of time away from tanning and they think they're pale again, even though they're clearly not.

Obviously something is happening in the mind, and that's where Umpa Lumpa status is achieved! Its like something parallel to anorexia, where they don't realise how ridiculous they actually look.

Don't think they're trying to change race though, that's a bit extreme! :D

I am ginger so I avoid tanning, otherwise my head would look like a large baked bean. I think it's just a fashion thing meself like.

What r u guys on about?

if girls have black hair and are pale they are scaired of looking like goths.
otherwise it is nothing to do with fashon or or anything else except that if you have no colour you look ill.

a tan looks good because you look healthier and your skin looks better.for example. . .
LEGS= with a tan you cant see blotches, speckles, spots, veins etc.
Face= your cheaks look livelier with colour and you dont get that smackhead look around the eyes that you sometimes get when your skins pale.

granted some scalls take it too far and become orange and it looks awful and fake, but they do that with the blonde in their hair, and the clothes thay wear etc etc.

When I can be bothered I wear fake tan, mainly because I think I look ill when I'm pale. I'm not trying to be black/asian. I would never use a sun bed again though. I mean... take a look at those haggered looking women who have used them for years...uuurrrggghhh!

Many many thanks for putting down your various viewpoints.

I've know many people to go aborad & just sit on a beach such as a Family Friend that went all the way to The Gambia (West Africa) & just stayed on the beach ? On their return they were 'happy' about the quailty of their Tan.

So instead of going into the nation & trying to understand a diffrent way of life all they wanted was a Tan.

The reason I put this post up is the feeling that this does happen, afterall if
Justin Timberlake or Eminem were Black their is NO WAY they would be that major.

It is just sad & the major issue is when am in the club dancing to House Music that has its origin in being an multicultural musical form. White people are always bugging me for 'gear' erm... cause am Black due to everyone that sells the stuff has to be Black as its the legal requirement in the U.K

If you can believe this I NEVER go on about issues of Race its just that I think this Summer & all the "am darker than you" lines have just gone to far & this place lets me let off some steam.

Also as am putting my views across I can learn from your various viewpoints & with this grow as a human being.

You would have thought that in this day and age such cultural stereotypes would be abolished but i hear what your saying, when i used to go to clubs with my ex-boyfriend (who was from ghana in africa and skin was very dark) we actually got hassled all the time. he was quite religious and hadn’t even tryed drugs. befor i had gone out with him i would have said that it was bullsh*t but it actually happens to an extent.

Can't say I have noticed any of my mates complaining about/comparing the tone or colour of their skin....this issue has nothing to do with race either, people wanting a tan get one because of the reasons so many have already succintly pointed out (healthier look, covering blemishes) plus the fact that sunlight on your skin helps the release of vitamin D and thus makes you feel more lively and energetic. I think bringing the 'race' aspect into this phenomenon is a bit naive.

i think its the simple fact that people are more aesthetically pleasing when they dont look pasty. a decent tan can disguise a whole host of unwanted phenomena such as tiredness, weathered skin etc.

... also orange is my favourite colour so i apply fake tan morning and night and visit the sunbed at least eightenn times a month. :oops: :oops: :oops:

I doubt it is because you are black, people in clubland are usually not that tactless.

Though I do get bugged myself quite often due to having a broad scouse accent, short hair and wearing various items of clothing that are throwbacks from my younger 'Scally' days (Rockport boots for durability and a La Coste Jacket that was free and would be a lovely jacket ( tasteful cream collared jacket, not tracky top!) but for the badge :oops: )

It really annoys the shit out of me though, I hate being labelled a scally because I can't afford a whole new wardrobe, ignorant tossers. :roll: :lol:

Your Mother, it aint a race thing. But you're right, it is worrying. The competitive aspect of it all is frightening and is indeed a problem akin to anorexia. It is a fashion with serious health consequences. A very close family member to me is going through the trauma of skin cancer and its terrifying. I've been on sunbeds and done the fake tan thing, but now I'm gonna be pale and proud forever more. Dark skin is indeed lovely, but so is white skin, everyone is sexy in my book! 8)

Going to Africa and sitting on a beach is SAD. Going to Africa and raving in a tent is ace! How is the Malawi thang going, anyone know :?:

When I was trying to sunbathe in Senegal, the owner of the hotel I was in kept asking the staff to come and move sunshades over me, because she was so worried about how my pale skin would react.

I did tell her I have to go bright red and look very, very ill before I tan, but she wasn't having it!

Australia still has the highest rate, but they've done loads to publicise the risks of skin cancer and their rate is dropping.

We, on the other hand, seem to takle little notice of the warnings and as such, the rate here has risen to the point where we will soon overtake the Aussies.

and i can't talk, i'm as bad as the next person for not putting enough sun cream on, even last week in ibiza, i already had a alright tan from previous trips this summer, but i fell asleep in the midday sun for an hour or so and i was the pink man for the day. you don't know what damage is done til its too late really.
