1. Shapes Red – Various (Tru Thoughts)
Probably the compilation LP of the year: with great tracks from QSO (the fantastic DJ Nappa remix of ‘Something That’s Real’), Diesler, Nostalgia 77 and Flevans, how could it be anything else?

2. Mannequin Mankind – David Borsu (Amalgama)
Combining sharp, broken-ish beats with d’n’b basslines and strings, it’s a guaranteed winner!

3. LP Sampler – Vaceo (inspiritmusic)
Vocalist Daniel Vacchio gives us a taster of what’s to come, including the excellent ‘Right Here’. With production from Dave ‘Phuturistix’ Jones…

4. Moving On – Colonel Red (Visions)
Alex Attias’ label brings the hardest working vocalist on the scene with a bit of Brass re-Construction for the noughties.

5. Hold On – Irfan feat Outlines (Sonar Kollectiv)
Following up the excellent ‘Matter of Time’ on GP’s Worldwide Exclusives, this proves they are more than just one-hit bootleg wonders; they’ve just been biding their time.

6. Revelations (Afrolatinblues) – Chris Thomas King (Afro Art)
A crazy meeting of Delta blues and broken beat… Afro Art’s million seller (he was in ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’ y’know) delivers a dark and brooding tune breathed on nicely by Paul Murphy

7. Broadcite Unplugged Volume 1 – Various (Broadcite)
Another compilation LP… this time featuring some lesser known names (with the exception of that man Colonel Red again!) but top quality tunes from Tubbs, Magic and Rustic Hut.

8. Boogie Man (LP) – Capri (Groove Lab)
Coming straight out of Leeds, this is proper music! Live instruments, fantastic production and funky-as-hell tunes – this takes us from the point where acid jazz (dare I mention it?) left off and updates the sound for now.

9. One of Us – Jaguar (Bad Taste)
With Funkadelic-inspired vocals, brass stabs, wah wah guitar – do I need to tell you any more?

10. Analogue Sugar (Tim Scott Remix) – Kid Sublime (CDR)
An extended and beefed up version of the original, my favourite track from his excellent ‘Basement Soul’ LP on Kindred Spirits, this one’s designed for the summer dancefloor!

You can hear most of these and much more besides on the forthcoming edition of 2types on Samurai FM. This session sees me hooking up with Kid Sublime and discussing his new LP, making beats naked and Dutch hip hop, all in the comfort of the front seat of my car… all will be revealed and the truth is not as dodgy as that makes it sound!!!
