I beg to differ Mr C, he is still one of the best D.J.'s on the planet. But he is not happy unless playing more than 3 hours where he can do his thang. Knuckles and Sanchez played the 051 complex back in da day too wasnt it Rob Jay's night?

everytime someone posts "which DJs would you like to see" hes always at the top.
his fabric mix was well refreshing, different from all the other house compilations I had got, also managed to get hold of some other older more soulful mixes which sound excellent!
agree that he wouldnt pull as big a crowd as some other tho..

But they would hear what real mixing is and how one of the few people in the world who you can properly call a D.J. do it.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a kid, but I don't know who he is...but he sounds pretty good and Fabric are generally good mixes, so I think I shall expand my musical knowledge and purhcase said CD :)

Hit and Miss IMO...
First heard him twice at his shortlived Nuttz residency in NYC in about 2001... this was a club size of the Lemon Lounge and he was pretty good, although it was the crowd that made it.... a great little mix of old-school Garage heads, chilled B-boys, and funky bohemian club kidz
Then heard him in Sheffield a few years back and he was truly WACK!! Think Frankie Knuckles at Chibuku...
The last time i heard him was at Fabric in summer 2003 and he was dope!!!! Had me singing like a bitch to Sounds of Blackness - Optimistic at about 5am off my tits... great night, even with the Fabric crowd!!!!
I say book him... but be prepared that he might dissappoint!!! The problem with some of these big US djs is that they assume when they play in the North of England that they have to dumb down their sound so they end up sounding like the latest deffected mix-cd... when what all of us really want is the real deal, with lots of classics etc thrown in, surely?

Good attitude Rich! :D
Saw him in Thompson's in Belfast at wan of the Endlessmusic.org gigs on a Sunday night a few months back . . . and he was top notch . . . as to be expected! Well worth booking.

Would be a great booking. Fascinating to watch too. He gets this real angry face on till his mix is ready to bring in, then he looks suddenly satisfied.
I disagree that he would just play a Defected mix cd type set. He's his own man, and I don't think he'd assume we'd want that.
Like so many 'house legends' though, it won't necessarily be value for money for both a punter's and promoter's pocket. In my experience, there's a notable exception to this: Kerri Chandler. He'll never dissapoint and would be a lot cheaper

Yeah get Kerri too.
Jesper Dahlback would be an amazing DJ in this vein to get to play at Chibuku. He of Svek fame is just sharp as f**k . . . I've rediscovered his mix (from a few years back) on betalounge.com and it's blown me away, AGAIN! :D
It's easily every bit as good today as it was then . . . that real sleek, deep, techy Scandanavian house sound is sublime, playing after either of the two Phil's this guy would be certain to push the Chibuku dancefloor once more . . . seriously, I can't recommend this guy enough . . . go to betalounge.com, past shows and type 'Jesper Dahlback' in the search box, listen and enjoy . . . trust me, you will!

Whilst we're on about Scandi-house - how about Jori Hulkonnen?
I think his (ex?) production partner Tiga would be a good choice too - would certainly pull a crowd and has kept it relatively real IMO.

wtf has Dahlbeck, Hulkonnen and Tiga got to do with the deepness, fluidity and soul of Tony Humphries? please?
absolutemoron
10-06-2005, 02:09 PM
Not a lot directly with Humphries admittedly - however Hulkonnen and Jesper Dahlback have done some awesome deep tracks.
ukcoolat,
You obviouisly haven't listened to many of the Svek label's productions, have you? :!: :?:
Deepness and fluidity in abundance . . .

Yeah i thought this odd:

Nothing wrong whatsoever with Jesper Dahlback (i'd quite like to hear him play) but i dont see what the hell he has to do with Frankie Knuckles!!! Certainly not in the same vein as Knuckles!
I'd disagree however that those guys mentioned dont have deepness, fluidity and soul, its just a completely different style of house to what the big man usually plays!!! and i'll add that i find some of the stuff he plays himself pretty soul-less - a vocal does not equal soul, and ive heard some mixes where he plays some pretty trashy 'soulful house'!!!

shouldn't go near a msg board once started drinking! time to go out methinks! (p.s. i'd rather warm up for humphries than knuckles - whilst the latter played a huge role in house music for which he should be respected i think he's a bit of a tit! The hump on the other hand is a cool bas.tard!!)
