Who do you think the city's top DJ is?

This can be anyone who plays in the city on a regular basis (ie a resident) or is from Liverpool (or surrounding areas) - all genres r included

Only current DJ's count, so you cant a cream resident from 1996 on!

My nominees are:

1. Steve Parry
2. Yousef
3. Dom Chung

Obviously, alot of DJ's are forum regulars, so feel free to big yourself up!

have fun!

Cant possibly be a debate really.Just personal choice.Alot of nites depend on mates initially to come and support so theyll be favoritism here.I would seemingly think that my mates are some of the best Djs.

Scott Mcgill
Johnny 1 Move (formally Micky Fun)
Brendan
Soulism
Mark Forshaw
Revo

Revo has really got me thinkng about my own style as a DJ becos of his sets recently.Hes well into the stuff i play aswell so i think when 2 differnat Djs find such mutual ground its really inspiring.Every one of these local lads have inspired me someway!

I think there are a number of dj's in this city that have pushed the Liverpool club scene to what it is now. There is something for everybody and this doesnt just relate to chibuku or circus. There are decent nights that represent different dance genres across the city. But if i had to choose some of my fav's

johnny 1 move
the beat monkeys
dom chung

in no particular order.

Lets hope it can just get better!!!

depends how ur basing it... if its with actual commercial success then it would go something like

Yousef (Radio 1 Dj, numerous productions, International Dj)
Phat Phil Cooper (Renowned Ibiza dj, major support tours, Chibuku ressie, International Dj)
Brendan Long (Bugged Out and Voodoo ressie, productions soon to come, International Dj)

that would have to be the top 3 i think based on commercial success and viability really.... anyone whose a resi for chibuku would obviously must have some talent as Chibuku is arguably the biggest club in the uk, or in the top 3... thats not to say they are all amazing Djs of course, all good, some brilliant (Johhny 1 Move).... as far as personal preference goes well id obviously go for the techno boys in town such as, in no particular order either, just who i think does indeed rock...

Scotty McGill, Dave Lawton, Mark Forshaw - the tfunkshun boys of course, excellent djs.... Steve Shiels, underatted even after 11 years at the Voodoo helm, a true resident and wikid dj.... and of course id HAVE to lump myself in there, im not saying im amazing by any means, but i do try and i put more into my sets than some do.... Bill Heckle is a wikid young dj too...

fuckin plenty of Dj talent in Liverpool definately

there are loads of others who impress on a regular basis

Leo belchetz played a stormer of a set at new years (the last time i was at a chibuku party)

Yousef, heard his IDJ mix. Ouch! But got to hand it to the guy definatly knows how to rock a party!

Johnny 1 Move. Guys got some serious hand speed, and tuneage

Dom Chung. Solid as eva

and steve parry. Don't think i heard him play, but used to listen to his show on the radio, got some good tunes.

I'm sure there are plenty of top djs to be added. Liverpool seems to breeding them at an exponential rate!

2. Yousef is a great DJ. I've got a lot of respect for his style, taste in house music and what he's done with Circus.

Some good choices there - I only saw Johnny 1 Move for the 1st time last month and he did a peak time breaks set with some really good tunes and turntable skills. Other good choices there - i've never experienced Leo though - whats his sound? he's getting a lot of votes

Thats a difficult one. The city's top DJ? I dont think people can really comment until they have heard nearly all the dj's spinning on at least a couple of occasions so some peeps comments are obviously blinkered. But I have the advantage of hearing possibly every Liverpool DJ spin over the last 12 years and I also possess an open mind.

Most important has to be Mike Knowler (he still spins in Southport) he brought House to the North West possibly, Liverpool certainly.

Most influential was Steve Parry as, like it or not, he supplied the top dj's from all over the globe with their tunes for years so must have been spinning the best first. He also held the Shelleys rezzie when they used to get Garnier and Sasha as guests and he didnt have too many breaks (which are very important to expose a dj whether they are crap or great) so made his own. I reckon that he is the best jock in the city although I am not into his 'big room' sound.

Used to go to Cream to see Yos in the trance period as he was the only jock playing proper House, but not feeling his sound the last couple of years. He is doing great things with Circus though.

Of course I am going to say that Mike Regan, Mark Lyons, Will Jazz and Nick the Greek are the best Scouse jocks in town thats cos I know me onions. Mike can grab everyones head in the room and take them with him listening to stuff they never thought they would dance to with his electro funk bassline Deep House that no-one else on this planet is playing. Wait til you hear his latest mix. Mark is the best around for the soulful sound, he has the Manchester vibe super locked, but he also likes his Acid House and Balearic. Will has his own sound be it super chilled or urban street funk, never fails to catch me. Nick the Greek has some serious skills when he gets them going, Soulful House, DnB, Boogie, Latin, Jazz nice sound.

The best of the rest:
Robbie Edwards on the classics is a party rocker like no other. Phil Charnock when he keeps it deep hits the spot. Steve Hodge has great skills and great selections. Gavin Moruda is classy. Neil Meekin got me rocking nicely in January. Greg Wilson was class at the Chair. Andy Carroll is still playing tunes in town too, respect. Les Ryder is still spinning decent stuff. John Ryan too. Steve Sheils 10 years ago, he went too hard for me but respect for still pushing the Detroit. Norman from The Sink/Eric's still rocks the joint if you can catch him. Plus everyone else we have asked to play at Loose Joints were very good.

Conrad is the Liverpool DJ that originally grabbed me and continues to be the mack daddy/daddy mack. Long may he reign. 8)

Phat Phil is the big daddy. An influencial DJ to me for his energy and approach as much as his skillz. :D

Greg Wilson is the real daddy. The Grandaddy!
His set at the Leccy Chair was evidence of him being perhaps the finest ever DJ round here.

All three of those blend the serious with the fun, the deep with the commercial. Thats what I likes. They dont take their eye off the dancefloor, but keep the heads happy.

But there are so many more than those 3. Obviously house-wise Yos is the main man, and Leo is awesome, and Soulizm is simply a naughty boy who wants to be punished. Emma gets better all the time too. And when J1M was scratching with his broken arm...

And quite frankly, these guys are all mates but Tim Scott is brilliant, perhaps the best DJ in Liverpool at this point in time, Mikey B is a genius waiting for the right time to strike, Ste Hodge is the best Sick Trumpeteer at the mo and of course Sarah and Alex Sweeney and Paul McGuire are my inspriration and musical companions. :D

Oh yeah, DJ Vertigo is still playing and he was the bench mark for many years for me! I've had my moments with Ste Sheils as well. I havent mentioned all the DJs I look up to round here in that list either, there is a lot of talent in this crazy town...

I think as far as drum and bass dj's go, producing is as important as mixing skills and how many dubplates they have from J Magik.

thats odd, i was under the impression that Futurebound produced aswell... especially seeing how ive seen him in his, maybe now old, studio back in Parr Street when i used to sit in on recording sessions there... im not a big dnb fan either but what ive heard of him he's pretty swift, as is Loz of course, this thread isnt a competition, if anything its a a thread of mutual appreciation....

I did show my appreciation earlier on in this thread actually. And yes he has been producing for years. I do think he's a good dj i've enjoyed many of his sets, not just at Chibuku.

if your talkin drum & bass then no one in Liverpool can touch the futurebound.
It's never just about the music!!

ahh right, i see... im detecting a slight undercurrent now... i know some people dont get on with him or think his attitude leave something to be desired? strange as i found him a nice guy when i met him but of course not everyone gets on...

but i was under the impression this thread was about who we think are the top djs in the city so maybe leaving personal beefs/differences aside wud be good, the "whatever floats ur boat" comment hints at a dislike to him but thats not what the threads about and doesnt need to go down that route any further really does it?

are there no moderators in these forums?

No, not at all always found him easy going and right good company... no undercurrents from me...

no i meant from LK, the quote i used being "its not always just about the music" couple with the rather throwaway comment, considering its meant to be a constructive thread about the citys fave djs, "whatever floats your boat mate" indicate a more than biased opinion against a person who is simply putting in what they can to their local scene... and as i said i met him, very nice guy indeed, but ive known people say unsavoury things about him which gave the impression a few people have had run ins with him thats all

like i said, this thread is about talking up the locals, not running them down....

back on topic

i think futurebound is ace
i went to buku for the one purpose to give flyers out at the end
i thought i might have liked felix but he was poo
traveled upstairs to find a mate and found myself ...in a matter of seconds...flailing my arms about like the rest of the madmen and women in there.
im not into dnb at all but the guy saved me from a possible boring night and opened my mind to a genre i thought id detested
met him breifly, seemed like a sound enough guy

I have known Brendan for nearly 10 years, and have djed and run club nights with him during a lot of that time. Trust me-he's one shit hot producer, a wicked dj. and definately a nice guy. He just has a massive enthusiasm for the music which doesn't make him difficult or anything close, just passionate.

Thanks for appreciation peoples. Now that I am moved lock stock back to the pool I guess I qualify again.

My vote, I'll give just one as lists are misleading and detract in my view, it goes to Mark Forshaw.

The boy kicks ass. On the quiet you understand as he is terribly modest.
He plays better house records better than the house djs; he plays better techno records better than the techno djs; he plays better broken beat than the broken beat djs; he probably plays better hip hop if only Steve Shields would leave the record on long enough  I play better electro than him though coz he hates that. Anti-drexcetic he is I tells ya.

He'd get more gigs and more success if he only cut his hair, but then again, he don't want that coz its just about the music.

this is a good thread.

not being a native, i am seeing new djs the whole time at the weekends. This is giving me a guide of whos tearing it up where and in different genres which is good for expanding the ole horizons.

well said sir!

you're right, liverpool has a developed a very diverse musical landscape and clubbing culture over the last 3-4 years. Its really coincided with the decline of the cream.

Being a townie who's lived in the city all my life its great to see so many talented DJ's, producers and promoters carving opportunities out for themselves and building solid reputations on the back of it.

Its one of the reasons i've never last this city, nor would i want to!

The most entertaining Scouse based djs for me are.

Brendan Long - never heard a bad set from Bren, versatile and consistent and plays my favourite shit, keep an eye out for his soon to come productions

Nocturne - welcome back to the Pool, we've missed ya, real playa.

Loz - gave Roni a good run for his money at Buku

Olabean - mad, mad skills

Ste & Terser - I like it when they play deep deep house, Cookie Dough was ace at EBGBs

Les Ryder gets my old school vote as he was always the man at Cream, his "warm up" sets were often better than the 'big time' sets from the main guests, or at the very least, on a par. Deffo a guy I looked up to in my younger days. Dreadlock.

Liverpool has many other solid performers, but I've already named too many.

Jonny 1 Move - This guy's got the skills, plus the effort this man puts into supporting breaks in the city is untrue!! Definately my favourite DJ in Liverpool!!

Magik - again pioneering to put Liverpool on the breaks map, plus his selection of breaks when he plays is sweet

Brendan Long - Has always impressed, and even though i'm not the biggest fan of electro/techno, have never heard this guy play a bad set and always kept me boogying, a pleasure to party with!

Beat Monkeys - Again got the skills and always good to get the dancefloor going, couple of the nicest DJ's you'll ever meet, always have time for you!

Futurebound - always kept my interest in Drum and bass since the first X i ever went to!! This guy has an undying passion for the music, and is always consistantly tight with his mixing, infact i don't think i've ever seen him drop a beat!!! Clinical!

definately jay jay da funk.especially when it comes to his mastery of the disco records in the 'choice' series.the way he waits for the record to finish completely and then plays another one complete with a gap and no beat matching is unbelieveable.
