Cool Edit Pro apparently can be used to make mixes according to a mate of mine?

Not sure about Cool Edit, but Tracktor is probably cheep and cheerful. It works fairly well but nothing can really match beats on the fly as well as th human ear yet so its far from perfect. That said, its perhaps the best thing you can get if you just want to mix mp3's easily.

Ableton LIVE 4.0.4 is a prog that most professionals use including Surgeon and Sasha. Its probably the future of live proformance (the definition of 'live' is questionable though in my opinion) yet still, its an awsome programe basically. You can easily match songs, its just a case of making sure the BPM on each song is equal to each other. But the beauty of it is that you can cut up bits of songs and mix them with other songs or loops you've cut from the original tracks. Thus you can quite easily have, for example, Freak by LFO looped over some noisebleed techno with some DJ Vadime in the background. Throw a few effect VST's over it and you might end up with something half-decent. Ableton LIVE is also the best prog to write and produce music with, if your working with VST's (in my opinion)...

The latter is considerably more expsensive.
